Roll another number....

A few months back, I got an email from the good folks at McMenamins.  They were planning to make October 2008 some sort of showcase for who they felt were the White Eagle's all time best acts and wanted MSH to play.  I politely explained that we had split and that we wouldn't be interested.  I emailed the fellas and told them of the honor and a conversation brewed.  After a day or two of deliberation, we decided to give the White Eagle one more night.

On Friday, October 17, I will be stepping onto that little stage one more time with YD, Kris and Greg to drink beer and sing all those songs we've sung so many times before.

Our brothers and sister from Seattle, North Twin, will be joining us with an opening set.  We're really stoked about that.

It's gonna be as fun as a bar full of old friends can be and it probably isn;t gonna happen again, so make sure you come on down if you have the inclination.

Smoke em if you got em.

Fallen Apples............

There's a little Moonshine Hangover related news to report.....

Kris Stuart has formed a new band called Root Jack. Calling on Portland roots rock vets Chris Hutton (drums) and Kevin Cowan (bass) Root Jack is a Southern style power trio that sounds like, well, Kris Stuart.  If you're a fan of Kris's songs, singing and playing during his tenure with MSH, you're really going to love this new band.  Too much is never enough, right?

In other post MSH band news Greg Montplaisir has been recruited by an old college buddy to join Echoway. A bit of a departure in style for Greg, Echoway mixes modern Portland style indie pop with 60's era psychedelic rock that leaves you asking the question: "What if The Moody Blues all graduated from Lincoln High in the late 1990's"

YD and Will continue to lay around the house in their pajamas and noodling along with old Beach Boys and Jan & Dean records. That is when they are not creating their own line of custom liquor drinks. One recent concoction promted a party goer to ask the question: "What if Christmas came in your mouth?"  To find the answer, please mix 2 parts chilled Evan Williams Egg Nog Whiskey with 1 part from-the-freezer Espresso Hazelnut Vodka.  Chase with your choice of domestic lager, of course.

-Enjoy! MSH

MSH on NineBullets Current mood: angsty

Resplandor got a nice review this week over on ninebullets.net....

"Resplandor is Moonshine Hangover's third, and apparently final, album. It's a real damned shame, too. I remember hearing Murder City Devils for the first time and falling in complete love only to find out that they had already broken up. Moonshine Hangover is the same deal, but on a slightly lesser scale. I mean, I mourned the fact that MCD had gone before I knew who they were for months…hell, on quiet drunken nights I still do a little. From what I can tell, Moonshine Hangover had just finally run its course and the band went their separate ways while remaining friends. The cd had been kicking it around my house for a while now and I only found out about the split when I started to do some research on the band. Gone or not, they made one hell of an album that you can still pick up. To quote others:

"There is an unmistakable grit to this sound - it is Rock n Roll and bourbon and blood and bone. There is an unwavering connection to the people and places where each of these men have been, and to their histories. This is music to drink to, music to dance to, music to love by, music to fight by and music to pray to.""

In other news, our pals from Alaska, The Whipsaws, are the top seller over on MilesOfMusic.com. Congrats, fellahs....

Oh, and I can't get enough of the new DBT.  God has played a terrible joke on me, bringing DBT to P-Town the same damned night as The Gourds.  Choosing which show to go to is like choosing which child to cast to the wolves. It just ain't fair.  I choose DBT, but my decision is made a lot easier because The Gourds are playing Eugene the next night.  Crap fellas, don't do this to me again.

Pouring a Little Out....

Kevin Dubrow R.I.P.

I can't say that he was a great singer or they were a great band, but grade school would not have been the same without Quiet Riot.  They were one of those bands that helped to define a period in my life -- remember when Cum on Feel The Noize unseated long-time champ Rock of Ages on the KGON Friday night Rock fights?  I do.  I normally wouldn't admit it, but I still like to bang my head and wake the dead a little.

Love's a bitch....

Exit Interview from Willamette Week Current mood: crazy

Q&A: Will Johnson on Moonshine Hangover's Last Show

l_84f6aaaf35ef691c481253bd2f018800 I'm trying to come up with some clever way to twist the metaphor of a hangover clearing up and a band named after one breaking up, and I'm coming up short. But after a half-decade, Moonshine Hangover calls it quits this week, and I spoke to bassist/vocalist Will Johnson about the life and death of the band. Hair of the dog, anyone?

LocalCut: How did you reach the decision to split?
Will Johnson: Over the last couple months, it became clear. We're all family guys with day jobs. Our band wives have, between all of us, had five kids in the past three years. And over time we've been pulled this way and that way, and there was a level of burnout, or people were bored or wanted to do something different. So we had some frank discussions over the last six to eight months. And our guitarist Kris, about a month and a half ago, told us he just had to leave and do something different, which was not a real surprise, so we decided to wind down. We didn't want to continue. We talked about finding another guitarist, but Kris was such an integral part of what we did, it wouldn't have felt right.

So how long was the band actually together?
We were together in this lineup for five and a half years. Before that was another band including myself and YD and Greg, we were called 24 Bitches on Mezcal for a couple years prior. Then, actually it was [local promoter] Lisa Lepine who told us, "Your name is really awful," and that was right around the same time our guitar player had some legal troubles, so we placed an ad in Willamette Week for a guitarist, and met Kris, who had just moved to Portland. Our guitar player left the band and actually ended up in prison, and we changed our name and went on. But YD and I have been best friends since we were 16, and we've been making music in one form or another since shortly after college. We like to drink beer, and playing music is one of the things we do when we drink beer together.

You said Kris moved here, but the rest of you are natives?
The three of us are Oregonians. Kris is orginally, technically, from North Carolina, but he's been a complete nomad. Let's see, he's lived in North Carolina, Georgia, Minnesota, Las Vegas, out here… never any place too long. Part of that restlessness might be why he needed to move on from the band.

Was the idea of breaking up around while you were preparing your last album [Resplanador, released last July]? Was there any sense of, "We'll see how the album does," and then when it didn't really take off or whatever, you decided to pull the plug?
Not really. We didn't really put a lot of energy into getting it out there, even though we worked on it far more than the previous two, and I think it's the greatest work we've done. But it did feel like work. I said music's something we do for fun, but while we were putting it together, it became work more than just a hobby. One of the things that kept us going as a band is that we didn't have any delusions or rock star dreams. We were happy with the band at a level that allowed us to play cool shows, but recording felt more like work. So the truth of the matter is we didn't have a real hard push when the record came out. Sales haven't been bad at all despite that.

You said your guitarist was eager to start other projects, and I hear he's been working with drummer/producer Chris Hutton. Is there a next project in the works for you or the others?
Well, there are irons in the fire, but I don't know what will come of them. I think I'll just take some time off for a while. I'm sure I'll end up doing something, but whether it's with a band, or just for recreation, I don't know. We've all spun off and had side projects along the way. Our drummer's got a new band, well it's actually just two guys, but they're called Goatsucker, and they've got a disc out that's basically instrumental, Norwegian-style heavy metal.

Well, thanks for taking the time to fill me in on the breakup.
Sorry there's not more drama! We had great chemistry as a band, there wasn't any superiority, it was always a democracy. There was no megalomania. So I don't see why we won't all remain friends.

Moonshine Hangover plays its final show this Friday, Nov. 9, at Dante's with Michael Dean Damron & Thee Loyal Bastards, North Twin and Scottland Barr & the Slow Drags. $7. 21+.

Crazy Dutch Fuckers.... Current mood: chipper
Here's a review from The Neatherlands (altcountry.nl). We don't speak Dutch and the free on-line translatiosn we found, don't make much sense, so we're not sure if it's any good or not.  It does mention Drive-by Truckers, The Bottle Rockets and The Gourds, though. So, as long as it doesn't say that we're "the opposite" of those bands or that we're a cheap imitation or something, then I guess it must be pretty good, because we know and love all those bands.
MOONSHINE HANGOVER

By No Means a Disaster: a Resplandor review from Americana UK Current mood: drunk Category: Music
Raucous fare from grizzled Oregon veterans

Moonshine Hangover are a superb American bar band - no more, no less. The members all resemble grizzled veterans of one too many honky tonks. 'Resplandor' is the bands third release and it is a perfect example of how drinking music should sound.

The band are at their best when they keep a country swing to their sound ('Dear Juanita', 'Sky Blue Water') although the slower more sensitive songs ('Wait On') are by no means a disaster either. Three members of the band contribute to the song-writing and also lead vocals, lending 'Resplandor' a nice level of variety. The flipside of this being that the album lacks the continuity that having only one song-writer gives.

'Resplandor' is probably not going to appear on any end of year 'best of' lists and it probably won't change many lives. However, the album serves as a perfect example of fine American rock and roll to soundtrack a night on the tiles, and sometimes that will do.
